In contrast to DFB singlemode lasers, Fabry-Perot (FP) QCLs do not have an integrated optical grating focusing the power to only one wavelength. Therefore they emit multimode and broad range and can cover more than 10% of the central emitting wavelength.
Some DFB lasers exhibit similar emission behavior than FP QCLs as they have several modes (multimode) and also have a broad emission range. These are however not genuine Fabry Perot QCLs and in general the emission does only cover several tens of wavenumbers. FP-QCLs can operate at room temperature on TEC. The emission is in the same wavelength range as for DFB QCLs. i.e. from 740cm-1 to 2390cm-1 with similar threshold current and voltage. The variation of temperature has a low influence on the emission bandwidth. This is mainly defined by the supplied current. FP-QCLs are well adapted when broad band emission is acceptable, for ex. in liquid spectroscopy, high power emiting sources, when no signal purity is required or for using the QCL with external cavities. Parameters that define a FP-QCL:

The graph below shows some high performances FP QCLs operating in CW at and higher than room-temperature. The histograms indicate the maximum CW operating temperature for a given laser range (left y-axis). The lines indicate the typical CW power at 20°C for the same laser ranges (right y-axis).
