New TeraHertz QC lasers available

12 January 2007

Alpes Lasers is shipping Far Infrared terahertz Quantum Cascade Lasers to Japan
Terahertz QC Lasers take advantage of matter transparency to provide information on the contents of items like containers, packages or letters by allowing imaging and/or absorption spectroscopy.

Alpes Lasers offers a compact and user friendly QCL terahertz system, composed of a LN2 dewar, a pulser (pulse generator and driver) and a THz-QCL emitter.

It can be equipped with Pulsed Multimode devices emitting at 73µm and 84µm.

Alpes Lasers invests continuous efforts to enlarge its covering of the Far Infrared spectrum. The next products coming soon will exhibit wavelengths of 75µm, 85µm, 86µm, 102µm, 106µm and more, up to 250µm (1.2THz) in pulsed mode operation. Lasers on submount operating CW at most of these wavelengths will soon be available together with a stand alone autonomous system.

THz radiation have a large potential of applications in the field of imaging. At such frequencies, matter is transparent for photons which are capable of travelling trough compact structures like X-rays may do, but without undesirable ionization effects. In addition to this, there is still an interaction with the electron of the matter allowing one to get spectroscopic information on the chemical nature of the observed matter. Great perspectives are then open for applications in medical and biological domains where degradation of living cells must be prevented.

Applications in Homeland security (airport scanning) will also beneficiate from this new and powerful source by allowing detection of hidden objects (explosives, weapons, drugs) in luggages, clothing or even human bodies.

Alpes Lasers purchases IPAG

17 January 2006

Alpes Lasers/Switzerland has acquired the IPAG (Innovative Processing AG/Germany) generating the new german company AL Technologies GmbH which continues the business of IPAG fully supporting existing customers and maintaining product line and product portfolio. Besides this, AL Technologies located in Darmstadt/Germany will extend its epi-wafer and coating services for various optoelectronic devices.

Alpes Lasers is the leading supplier of Quantum Cascade Lasers for mid and far infrared with applications mostly in chemical sensing applied to medical diagnostic, security, process and environnemental monitoring as well as directed energy applications. By acquiring IPAGs technology and manufacturing capabilities for buried heterostructure semiconductor lasers as well as MOVPE wafer growth, Alpes Lasers is exploiting the synergies between a manufacturer of bipolar and unipolar lasers and accesses to large volume production capabilities.

As a result Alpes Lasers is now a leading company for Quantum Cascade Lasers for measurement and test applications as well as high speed laser diodes for telecom and datacom applications including epi-wafer, coating and process services.
